The purpose of the Ton-A-Wandah Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program is to give young women who are rising high school juniors and seniors an introduction to basic leadership dynamics, life-learning skills training, and the tools necessary to assess their own desires in becoming a camp counselor. Our CIT program is organized into six components: leadership skills worships, supervised cabin counselor assistance, activity lesson plan development and instruction assistance, all-camp evening program selection and planning, a three-day/two-night outdoor education experience and the selection, approval and completion of a group service project.
Many CIT's are lifelong TAW campers who are familiar with the camp's core values, traditions, and daily routine. For others, it may be their first experience coming to Camp Ton-A-Wandah. No matter which way you come, the Counselor in Training Program still offers a great opportunity for those interested in developing their skills and leadership capabilities.
CITs are neither campers nor counselors. Their position affords them select responsibilities and privileges which place them in their own unique role at camp. Unlike other campers, CITs pay a reduced tuition fee and receive additional instruction in many of the traditional camp activities as well as participate in CIT-specific training and events.
CITs who successfully graduate from the program and show desire for future camp staff employment are given primary consideration for open Counselor Assistant positions the following summer. This is only guaranteed if their employment application is received by the camp office postmarked by December 15th. In addition, it should be noted that rising high school seniors may only apply for a Counselor Assistant position if they successfully complete the CIT program the previous summer. Otherwise, all employment applicants for cabin Counselor positions must complete a year of post-high school education.
